TVS Garden Project

TVS Garden Project

TVS Garden Project

What started as a small garden project at Transylvania Vocational Services (TVS) has evolved into a garden community that includes every member of the INTERACT program and creates a full circle of interactive education and life skills.

INTERACT is an acronym for Interact, Network, Teach, Engage, Relate, Achieve, Connect, Together. The INTERACT program provides activities and opportunities for adults with intellectual and developmental challenges.  All participants receive one-on-one services from TVS Direct Support Professionals (DSP), engage within the community as volunteers, and many work supervised on the TVS production floor. TVS also offers special classes such as culinary, physical exercise, social skills, photography and literacy for INTERACT participants.

“We are always looking to actively engage participants with activities that benefit their minds and bodies,” INTERACT Supervisor Jeanette Wayne said.

The garden project began a year and a half ago after Wayne noticed that the exterior of the building had no flowers and no color.

The garden crew was originally composed of only three members hired by TVS to landscape the exterior of the building.

Along with planting and watering the flowers, they also learn the names of the flowers, what environments they thrive in, the difference between annuals and perennials, and some of the troublesome insects that attempt to eat the plants and how to keep them away.

The project has since lead to the creation to the Garden Club in 2019, expanding from flowers to vegetables in elevated boxes using “square foot gardening” principles.  The boxes are made from pine wood and have a steel bottom to help the boxes have a longer life and to be light weight.

They were built by the Square Foot Gardening Foundation, a nonprofit organization with a mission to encourage gardening, plant-based living, self-sufficiency, and low-impact food production.  TVS has four 3×3 elevated gardens are handicap accessible and allow for anyone and everyone to participate in the garden activities.

Prior to planting the vegetables, the INTERACT participants were responsible for staining and varnishing the garden boxes. The vegetable garden is maintained completely organic and is grown without pesticides. Once the vegetables are ready to be harvested, they are used in the INTERACT culinary class and for sharing among the INTERACT participants.

With the growing popularity, the entire INTERACT group is now participating in the newly added garden.

“The club has grown into a community project,” said Wayne. “It feels like a family. We are all working towards a common goal and it feels so comfortable.”

The garden was planted earlier this spring with a variety of vegetables and herbs. Spinach, lettuce, basil, chili peppers, green beans, sugar snap peas, squash, zucchini, broccoli and cabbage were all planted from seeds.

The sugar snap peas were so popular among participants that they have already planted more. Only the tomatoes in the garden were planted from a seedling stage.

Since the early stages of the project, the INTERACT community visits the garden around 3 times a week. “It is such a great project,” said Wayne. “We hope to continue growing the garden and participation.”

Honoring Cathy Miller for 25 Years of Service

Honoring Cathy Miller for 25 Years of Service

Cathy Miller has worked at Transylvania Vocational Services (TVS) consecutively for 25 years working in many different departments. Prior to her consecutive years, Cathy was previously hired at TVS in the 80s bringing her grand total to 37 years of experience.

Before coming to TVS, Cathy worked at the Brevard Music Center in the kitchen. She continued with her love of being in the kitchen as one of her many jobs at TVS.

Cathy’s first job at TVS was as a production worker making x-ray film boxes for the DuPont Company and loading them into large gaylords. Cathy has also worked in the kitchen, in the INTERACT program with Gwenda Schuler as her Supervisor, as a machine operator, and as a production operator as TVS has grown and evolved over the years.

“My favorite place to work is in production on line four packaging bakery mix and when we were packaging chocolate chips,” said Cathy. “I am looking forward to seeing new products and switching up my jobs around here.”

TVS CEO Jamie Brandenburg said, “We are blessed to have Cathy as a part of the TVS family for 25 years. Having employees with such longevity is part of what makes TVS such a special place to work!”

While the list of stories Cathy could tell about TVS would take hours, her favorite memories revolve around the company picnics, Christmas parties surrounded by families of coworkers, and the TVS award ceremonies.

“From all the picnics, I have a huge stack of shirts,” said Cathy. “I also really enjoyed going to the Source America National Conference in Atlanta. That was a good time.”

Other memories date further back to when TVS had a kitchen that served different food daily including: hot dogs, lasagna, or salad. “I miss working with past supervisors, Vera Harris and Era Byers, from the DuPont days,” Cathy said.

Becky Alderman, COO, has been on the journey with Cathy since the beginning of her career at TVS. “Cathy is one of the original employees,” said Becky. “She is a part of TVS that helps pass on our culture by quietly helping new people by showing them the right away.”

According to Cathy, Becky and retired CEO, Nancy Stricker “were like second moms” and claimed, with a laugh, that they would say that they raised her. However, Becky disagreed by saying, “We all raised each other, we had a lot to learn and it was so important that we all supported each other.”

Cathy is interwoven into the fabric of TVS and does have some advice after 25 years, “Be yourself, go by the rules and don’t get in trouble ‘cause it don’t take much to get into trouble.”

Her hobbies outside work include baking desserts, working in a garden, and crafting. Luckily, for fellow employees at TVS some of her passions show up at work.

“She has been so sweet to remember my birthday,” Becky said. “She always drops a little something off.” For Becky’s birthday a few years ago, Cathy created a t-shirt that made a funny play on Becky’s birthday falling on Tax Day.

“The company is blessed to have her,” said Becky. “I don’t know where we would be without her.”

For the birthday of Cathy’s best friend, Patricia Fisher, she made a Better Than Sex cake.

“She needs to open her own restaurant and bake,” said Pat.

Pat works in Housekeeping and has been laughing with Cathy for 22 years. “I remember Cathy telling me, ‘don’t get overwhelmed’ when I was first hired,” recalls Pat. “Back when we first started, we sometimes had to work weekends and we would be so tired that we would just laugh and then Vera would laugh, just making us laugh even harder.”

Cathy is a kind and gentle soul that you could call if you ever needed help.”

Operations Manager Mark Mulenex has worked with Cathy for 19 years. “Cathy always brings in pies and cakes for the guys on their birthdays, but she sneaks them in and leaves them on the desk,” said Mark.

Cathy has always been the person behind the scenes, never wanting to be the center of attention but also viewed as a mother figure on the production floor.

“She is always seen smiling and laughing when she is here and is missed when she has a day off,” said Mark. “She is strong and dedicated; a true TVS person ever since I’ve known her.”

TVS Committed to Living Wage Certification

TVS Committed to Living Wage Certification

It has been a year since Transylvania Vocational Services (TVS) became the 55th business in Transylvania County to be Living Wage Certified by The Living Wage Coalition of Transylvania County (LWCTC). TVS is the second largest living wage certified employer in the county.

TVS joined over 50 other businesses in Brevard and is looking to be reevaluated in 2020. The LWCTC requires businesses to recertify every two-years.

“We wanted to be living wage certified as a way to show our commitment to our employees,” said TVS CEO Jamie Brandenburg.

Underwear Drive for Sharing House is a Success!

Underwear Drive for Sharing House is a Success!

TVS team members rallied together to purchase a whopping 114 pair of boxer/briefs to donate to a Sharing House underwear drive. During a recent visit to Sharing House by  Nancy Stricker, TVS Community Relations representative, she learned of the dire need to shore up their stock of underwear to give to those in need. Nancy shared this need with Emily Owens, Training & Development Specialist, who jumped at the chance to inspire TVS team members to be part of the underwear drive. Emily posted fun signs around the building and gave regular nudges to contribute to the cause. Another example of TVS being dedicated to all people in our community.

National Day for Choice

National Day for Choice

Today, April 16th, is a National Day of Choice.  This day of advocacy recognizes that within the past few years new laws and regulations have limited the choices that individuals with significant disabilities have regarding where they are allowed to work, live, or receive training.  Current their right to work is protected by section 14C of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

The Congressional “Raise the Wage Act of 2019” proposes increases to the federal minimum wage, yet also abolishes section 14C completely. We are asking Congress to vote NO” to this bill. National advocates hope that failure of the Raise the Wage Act of 2019 will lead revision of the bill, to still SUPPORT CHOICE for individuals with significant disabilities.  Pressure from families and communities to protect and guarantee person-centered choice for people with disabilities is our goal.

Below you will see a statement that you can copy and paste into an email to our Congressional Delegation.  The attached flyer includes email addresses and phone numbers for our Congressional delegation. We welcome your support in having the voices of those with significant disabilities heard and respected on this National Day of Choice.  Thank you.

“Please protect the choice of individuals with significant disabilities to work where they choose, by preserving Section 14c of the Fair Labor Standards Act.  Voting NO on the Raise the Wage Act of 2019 will show your communities and constituents your commitment guarantee the right to work for individuals with disabilities.  Let’s not punish people whose choices are already limited by enacting regulations and laws which further restrict their lives”.
